Academic Careers and Integrity in Science

An interview with Dr Chris Earl. Part 1 of 2. What it takes to maintain integrity, the reality of a career in biological research, funding and work-life balance.

Welcome to the TackUp Science podcast, Episode 2. This is the first of a two-part interview with Dr Chris Earl, where we’ll be chatting about the allure of a career in biological research, changing your degree once you’ve already started and how research can become a 7 day a week job.

We delve into the realities facing researchers, including the pressure to move around and the funding challenges affecting UK universities. In this high-pressure career, what does it take to preserve academic integrity?

In the next episode, we’ll be talking about the difficulties of working in a world where academics are commonly judged by a narrow set of metrics. We’ll discuss how to maintain some work-life balance and consider how philosophy and science are much more connected that might appear at first glance.

A huge ‘thank you’ to Dr Chris Earl both for answering my questions and for editing this episode. Check out his Substack called MOL-BIO and YouTube channel by the same name.
